The Isle of Man based online casino software provider, Playtech, announced that it has made an official request for a remote gambling license from the Jersey jurisdiction, making it the first gambling company in the world to do so.
Jersey, situated in the Channel Islands off the coast of French Normandy, changed its gambling laws in 2008 in a bid to become a leading egambling licensing jurisdiction. Since then, it has been trying to woo top companies to apply for licenses, and this week it was confirmed that Playtech will be the first to do so.
“We are delighted to be seeking an operating license in Jersey,” said the CEO of Playtech, Mor Weizer. “We met last year with the Jersey authorities in Israel who convinced us of the merits of the new licensing regime and their commitment to the sector. With many of our existing licensees having operations in the Channel Islands it makes good sense for us to seek a license in Jersey to support our customers from a regulated jurisdiction with a first class infrastructure.”
Playtech provides its award winning software to many licensees in the online gambling business, including top names such as Mansion Casino and LesACasino.com. The group’s superb games portfolio boasts hundreds of titles, including branded slots such as the Marvel Comics series and King Kong.
The Economic Development Minister for Jersey, Alan Maclean said that Playtech’s license application was a “huge stamp of approval for the [island’s] egaming strategy.”
